Representing our Boys & Girls Club in this year’s State Youth of the Year competition was our 2020-21 Youth of the Year, Fond du Lac High School senior Eltayana Wilson. Eltayana was chosen to represent our Club because of her overall commitment she has shown to the Club! She has been a great leader among her peers throughout her more than 10 years as a Club member, gets involved in the Fond du Lac community by volunteering her time, and has been involved within the Club community by becoming a member of our program staff as well as being a natural mentor to younger members.
Due to COVID restrictions, the competition did not take place in person as it typically does. Our Club staff and a few board members helped to make the day extra special for Eltayana, as she had her own private room decorated with flowers, inspirational quotes and all of her favorite snacks to keep her feeling energized throughout the day.
Prior to this virtual competition, Youth of the Year were required to fill out an application and submit three essays for review. During the competition, Eltayana and 13 other Youth of the Year in our state each gave a speech detailing their Club experiences and why they should be chosen as Wisconsin’s Youth of the Year. They were then interviewed by a panel of judges to answer additional questions related to the content in their speech and application. The top five finalists, based on the results of their speech and interview scores, were the stars of an online awards presentation. The winner of the competition was announced live via the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wisconsin Facebook page.
Eltayana did an excellent job in the competition. We are very proud of how well she represents our Boys & Girls Club, with so much class and poise. She gained a lot of great memories and even more leadership skills through this experience. Eltayana’s future is very bright and we are confident she will be successful in her future endeavors.
