September Program Highlights – Afterschool FUN!

We started our school year program on September 7 and could not be more excited to welcome back so many familiar faces, as well as many NEW smiling faces! The beginning of the school year is an interesting time of transition for our kids, getting back into the routine of waking up early and focusing on learning for several hours every day. At the Boys & Girls Club, we believe strongly in locking arms with our school district and doing everything in our power to promote the importance of Academic Success among the youth we serve.

At the same time, however, we make sure to bring the FUN by providing our Club members with endless opportunities and experiences that keep them excited to walk (not run, because, safety first!) through our doors after school every day. One of our favorite activities from the first few weeks of the school year program has just been spending LOTS of outside time playing kickball, creating chalk art, and simply playing on the playground with friends while the weather is still warm and sunny.

Another favorite activity is one that we enjoy doing a few times per year, though this time it was in remembrance of the tragic events that took place on September 11, 2001…exactly 20 years ago. We sent letters and artwork to our U.S. troops thanking them for their bravery and unwavering commitment to keep us all safe by serving our beautiful country. We couldn’t be more proud of the heart and soul our Club members put into writing their letters and creating special artwork to send out to our soldiers.

In addition, we know that kids LOVE any activity that involves some yummy food! And if the food happens to coincide with a cool story, even better! Enter our “Bookin’ & Cookin’ program, which is always a huge hit no matter what age the kids are! After story time with the book “Arnie the Doughnut”, Pier Clubhouse members made apple donuts for our Bookin’ & Cookin’ program. Meanwhile, Club members at our Johnsonville site read “If You Give a Pig a Pancake” together and then made pancakes to eat. So much READING and LEARNING taking place simultaneously!

Finally, our Chegwin Club members are loving LEGO Club and Math Madness! From building robots and “Among Us” creatures, to playing number bingo, multiplication and money bingo, to piecing together tangram pattern blocks, they just can’t get enough. And to celebrate the beginning of the fall season, some of our Club members created “fall pointillism” artwork which turned out wonderfully! We love to watch our Club members grow and develop into their authentic and creative selves. This is what it’s all about!
