Teens Experience Washington D.C.

In early August, 18 teen Club members had the opportunity to experience an all-expense paid trip to our nation’s capitol, sponsored by a Learning Journey Grant through Herb Kohl Philanthropies. Youth were selected based on their overall attendance, character and leadership, and involvement in programs that we offer and run at the Boys & Girls Club. The teens were chaperoned by two leadership staff, Dillon Wiese (director of teen services) and Aly Sanders (director of social emotional learning). The Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh also joined our group for the three (3) day trip.

Of the trip, Wiese stated, “This was a chance for Club members to learn about our nation’s history. The premise of the trip is for it to be a learning journey requiring Club members to be engaged in everything they are seeing and learning about. There are not many youth in our country that get offered an experience like this and I’m very proud of the Club members we brought along who took advantage of and embraced an incredible opportunity.”

Throughout their visit, the sites toured were the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Jefferson, FDR and MLK Memorials, the White House, the World War II Memorial, the Lincoln, Vietnam Veteran and Korean War Veteran Memorials, Georgetown University, the Air Force and Marine Corps War Memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon Memorial, and the Museum of Natural History. The trip was rounded out with a tour of the United States Capitol Building, which included photo stops at the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court. It was a great experience for all!
