Program Highlights – Love, Friendship & Black History

February is a month filled with lots of love, hearts and learning. We take time to celebrate love as well as the many contributions of Black Americans from the past and the present during Black History Month. Our Club members, and staff, have been busy spreading love and learning all about black history throughout this month by participating in several fun and meaningful activities.

One of the most important things we have been working on with our Club members is how to be a good friend to others. Miss Aly’s social emotional learning (SEL) program earlier this month was all about friendship! First graders learned what qualities make a good friend and how they can be a friend to others. We created Valentines with sweet sayings for our wonderful teachers at our school sites, and even had fun passing out giant heart rings to represent our love for our friends, ourselves, and everyone we come in contact with each day.

Our staff and board members facilitated youth focus groups, which are an opportunity to listen more closely to our kids and get their input on what makes the Club great. We use their feedback to build on strengths and improve where opportunities exist. Our kids are the heartbeat of the Club. When we listen to them, we can’t go wrong!

And in celebration of Black History Month, we decorated our classroom doors with art that represents black history icons and quotes they are famous for. In addition, our favorite activity was using our own heart hands with a different quote from a famous black entertainer. Here are some of our favorite quotes:

“Once you took the first step, anything was possible.” – Katherine Johnson, Late NASA Research Mathematician

“Don’t be afraid of failure. This is the way to succeed.” – Lebron James, NBA Star

“You have to believe in yourself when no one else does.” – Serena Williams, Professional Tennis Player

“The struggles along the way are only meant to shape you for your purpose.” – Chadwick Boseman, Late American Actor and Playwright
